County Fairs and Festivals

Southern California has many small to large fairs and festivals during the year. We have listed the few that stand out and are the most entertaining.

Los Angeles County Fair
This Fair is called the largest fair in the U.S. The area set aside for rides and concessions are larger then the total area of most other fairs. The fair features horse racing, pig racing and drag racing. There are many huge air-conditioned buildings that shelter the countless exhibits from the summer sun. Bands, parades, singing groups and artists are seen around the area. The large grandstand at the racetrack is a drawing place for big name entertainers to play to the fans in the evening hours. On the north side of the fair is a huge floral building containing many exhibits and booths. On the south side are some very large barns containing many of different types of farm animals. They have cow milking shows as well as animal judging contests. The fair is a great place to take the kids or your friend or spouse as you walk around checking out all there is to see. The fair starts in mid September and usually runs for a couple of weeks. This great fair is located in Pomona at Arrow Highway and Gary Ave. If you are on the 10 freeway you will see large signs directing you to the fair. (909) 623-3111

Pageant of the Masters and the Festival of Arts
Located in laguna Beach, the Pageant of the Masters is the essence of living art. Living is the key word for this event. The Pageant is held outdoors in a beautiful theater set in laguna Canyon. Local residents dress up as famous paintings or sculpture and sit, stand or lay down in settings exactly like the original. With highly technical lighting and modern makeup techniques and great sets, you can’t tell the living sets from the original paintings or sculptures. This is done with volunteers both on stage and behind. Hundreds of hours go into this production each year. This is not to be missed. Held in early July and usually lasting into late August. Reservations are a must, call early. Along with the pageant is the Festival of Arts, this means close to 150 artists exhibiting their works just outside the theater. The artists must be living within twenty miles or so, of the festival. The art work is second to none and just walking though the area is an uplifting experience. Across the street is the Sawdust Art Festival. This is unique paintings, crafts and unusual items, for sale. We stress the word unusual as some of the art work is unbelievable. The Sawdust Festival runs from late June to early September. Getting to both Festivals-from the Pacific Coast Highway, take Broadway Street from downtown Laguna Beach east to Laguna Canyon Road. From the 405 or the 5 freeways, take Laguna Canyon Road west. It is easy to find the Festivals once you get in the area. 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach Phone Numbers Pageant (949) 497-6582 or (800) 487-3378 Sawdust (949) 494-3030
