Lakes, Fishing and Whale Watching

Great fishing can be had in Southern California, salt water and fresh water fish are in abundance and most areas are easy to get to. Most of the public salt water piers can be fished off of without a fishing license. There are many lakes in our area and most have boat rentals available. Did you ever notice that some of the people on the shore cast out to the center of the lake and some of the people in boats cast close to the shore. Here are some of the better places to go. (In our opinion)

Inland Valley

Mount Baldy Trout Pools
Many rainbow trout have been taken from this private fishing hole. Some as big as 18 inches. No license is required. Mount Baldy road, just up the hill from Mount Baldy Village. (909) 982-4246

Catfish, bass and bluegill have all been good here.

San Diego Area

Lake Poway Recreation Area

Lake Hodges

Lake Murray Community Park
Bass, catfish, crappie and trout swim in this pleasant setting. 5540 Kiowa Drive off of Lake Murray Blvd, La Mesa, (619) 465-3474
San Bernardino Mountains

Big Bear Lake
Trout, Bass and Catfish and occasionally other fish. We saw a young guy pull a catfish in from shore that was half as big as he was in the summer of 2001.

Gregory Lake
(909) 338-2233 Crappie and Trout and occasionally other fish, mostly hanging around tree roots and shady areas but early fishing is good most anywhere. Jenks Lake (909) 794-1123 Trout and occasionally other fish. This is a great place for peace and quiet.

Silverwood Lake
Catfish and bass along with crappie swim here. The best catch is morning or evening near the dam or shady areas. (760) 389-2303

Riverside county

Corona Lake
Catfish seem to be the fish of choice here. Buy the dam and shady areas look to be best. (909) 277-4489

Lake Elsinore
Lots of catfish and some bass are taken from the area plus a few other fish.

Lake Skinner
Catfish, bass and occasionally other fish have been pulled out of this lake. A lot of the catfish are caught by the dam.(909) 926-1505

Lake Perris
We have not been to Perris lake in many years as we did not like the condition it was in. My wife and I were driving around looking for camp sites when we found ourselves driving up the road to Perris lake. Wow, were we surprised! It had been redone and cleaned up. They have great camp sites with showers and bathrooms, “clean bathrooms.” Boaters, day use for picnics, campers and fishermen flock to enjoy the sparkling waters of Lake Perris today, but can hardly imagine the changes that have occurred here.
The recreation area is located 11 miles south of Riverside via Highway 60 or I 215. From the 60 freeway east, exit Moreno Beach Dr, go right From the 215 south, exit Ramona Expressway and go left. The signs are helpful and finding your way is fairly easy. Reservations are a must, except for day use but call ahead. Family camping and watercraft use reservation are not made through the State Park. These reservations are made through a company called Reserve America. 1-800-444-7275

A fishing license usually is not required on most public piers in California. The ocean holds many different kinds of fascinating and great tasting fish. Albacore, barracuda, sea bass, rockfish, marlin, yellowtail, halibut, salmon, rock fish, ling cod, rock cod, tuna and a bunch of different and weird fish. Look for the list of piers on our harbors, bays and piers page. Most harbors and piers have half and all day fishing boats to can go out on. These guys know the places to get fish. Most fishing boats have a bait boy who will clean your fish for free but it’s probably a good idea to tip him. Your call though. Shore fishing is fun and pleasurable. You need a long pole and a maybe chair. The fish run close to the shore during certain days and tides. Check with your local bait shop and they will tell you when and where you can get the best chance for some nice fish. Fishing around swimmers is probably not allowed but again check with the bait people as to the best areas to fish.

Salton Sea
Corvina and tilapia. Check the weather before going, the wind can come up hard in the afternoon. There is a limit on corvina but the Salton Sea web site says you can catch all the tilapia you can. The average one to three pounds. On rare occasions the water condition may make the fish unsafe for eating. Check with the Park Rangers. (760) 393-3052. Just a note-Anglers in the area that use CB’s are mostly on channel one.
